My social skills are not doing well.

I'm not sure I trust myself in public anymore.
We’ve got high hopes for when the world re-opens post-Covid. No doubt there will be an onslaught of social engagements to attend and arrange. But we’re all a little rusty. It doesn’t matter what kind of personality you have, things might be awkward for a little while.
Is this you?
The extroverted people-person:
You’ve been so starved for social interaction that you’re now like a hyper puppy when you see people you like.
The introverted stay-at home person:
You’ve been pretty cozy in your nest, but now the thought of gatherings is overwhelming.
Both of the personality types I’ve described may experience social discomfort when the world reopens. Everyone will experience this in different ways.
Here are a few social tips that may help:
- Be interested in other people—Often if we are focusing on our own social performance it can escalate our anxiety. Instead, focus on what you’d like to learn from other people. Ask real questions about how people have experienced the pandemic, how they are coping with a starved social life, and what have been the hardest challenges for them. If you’re the extrovert, this will help you stop and listen to others. If you’re the introvert, it will help you emerge from your shell.
- Smile at strangers and make eye contact—You might not be good at small talk, but a smile can go a long way to brighten someone else’s day.
- Don’t hide at home--You may be tempted to continue lockdown life after things re-open, but please don’t.. We only functioned without friends for a year because we had to. We need face-to-face interactions with friends, family, and strangers alike. It helps us feel balanced and normal. Even if it’s tough, prioritize gathering with people again.
- Trust you’re not alone—It may not be obvious but the person you’re talking to may be uncomfortable too. We’ve all been antisocial for over a year now—it takes time to regain social confidence. Over time we’ll find our groove again!
We hope these tips help you prepare for social engagements. We can’t wait for the restrictions to be lifted so we can return to in-person counselling! Until then, we have virtual sessions available if you live in Simcoe County and need someone to talk to. We are here to help.
