Navigating tricky Relationships

Sometimes people are hard to get along with. Maybe it's your friend, a relative, a neighbour or co-worker. Whether they know it or not, you don't feel like things are going as smoothly as they could.
Relationship troubles can cause many side effects for us:
  • It may be causing anxiety when you have to interact with this person.
  • You may be feeling stress symptoms such as muscle tension, chest pain, fatigue, upset stomach, loss of appetite.
  • Thoughts of the relationship troubles are taking over, making it difficult focus on tasks
  • There may be strong feelings of anger, sadness, anxiety, irritability, or restlessness
  • You may find your thoughts or reactions are becoming unhealthy or harder to control

The approach to a difficult relationship will depend on the type of relationship and the nature of the difficulty.
Your therapy goals may include things like:
  • Establishing boundaries in relationships
  • Learning new communication skills
  • Finding relaxation techniques that help reduce stress

  • Gaining strategies for conflict resolution
  • Processing difficult conversations

When to get help

This relationship stress may have been part of your life for a long time. Regardless of how old the challenges or how difficult things seem, talk therapy may be beneficial. No matter how old or new the relationship stress, it may be helpful to talk with a trusted professional. We can't change other people, but therapy can help us find ways to cope with circumstances and build healthy boundaries.

Relationship stress can have major effects on our health and well-being. Though the relationship may be unavoidable, wouldn't it be nice to reduce stressors and find ways to cope? It's important to take care of yourself. Counselling may be a good first step, helping to identify pathways towards a less relational stress.

We'll identify your therapy goals for the relationship. Whether you're looking to learn communication skills, conflict resolution, or just need space to be heard, we would love to help.
