Why You Should See A Therapist After A Car Accident

Guest Post • July 17, 2018

A car accident of any type can have a number of different long-term impacts on a person. From a whiplash injury to a traumatic brain injury (TBI), it is vital that anyone involved in a wreck seek the proper medical care following the accident. This may involve going to the hospital to fix a broken bone or seeing a therapist for any long-term mental health or possible brain injuries. Regardless of the type of accident or injury, everyone should seek medical care immediately.

Not All Injuries Are Visible

Broken bones or bruises can often result from a car accident but not all injuries are quite so visible. “If you’ve been struck, have fallen, or were otherwise the victim of a forceful impact to the head, a TBI is a very real possibility. TBIs are caused by a jolt to the brain, which can bump against the skull and disrupt normal brain function.” Internal bleeding or traumatic brain injuries can happen from any accident and getting a full workup from a doctor immediately following an accident can help uncover signs of internal injuries as early as possible. Even a small fender bender can cause internal or traumatic injuries that cannot be seen. Instead, they have to be detected by a medical professional or medical equipment.

Additionally, the trauma of being in an accident can itself cause a number of other health issues, such as anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. These may go away after a few weeks, or they may persist long term. It is difficult to know whether this will be the case without seeking the help of a therapist. It is important to get screened for trauma or any traumatic brain injuries following an accident in order to better care for yourself.

Post-Accident Treatment

The physical care needed immediately following an accident can be provided by emergency medical services, hospitals, and other medical providers. Your doctor can help with longer-term medical needs.

For those suffering from anxiety, stress, or other mental health conditions following an accident, it is imperative that you visit a therapist as soon as possible. These conditions may require longer-term care to address the symptoms of stress and trauma well after any broken bones have healed. Insomnia, depression, or issues with confusion or memory can all indicate possible trauma and may need treatment for anywhere from a few weeks to a few years. Starting treatment as soon after the accident as possible can help better manage any trauma.

These are just a few reasons why you should see a therapist after a car accident. It can help address immediate trauma and reduce and treat longer-term symptoms of stress and trauma.
